These last few chapters have been very exciting to me. Once the savage found out about how Lenina sleeps with everyone, I thought he would act out and that is exactly what he did. She is now scared of him and doesn't know what to do. Since Bernard has been acting different and has been acting popular, I knew that John would start to get mad at him and go against him just like he did. I was very surprised and somewhat excited when the savage freaked out towards the twins because he wants them to change their minds and ends up getting in trouble for it. I liked that he voiced his own opinion.
Overall, I expected the directors reaction about Linda and John to be the way it was. I think that the director will try and deny anything that ever happened with either of them because he will be getting harassed. I also think that Bernard will use Linda and John against the director so that he will not have to be sent away to Iceland. Bringing these two back to the hatcheries will end well for Bernard. After hearing how excited John was about going to the new world with Bernard, I wonder if he will actually like it once he gets there. I wonder if his father will want him around or if he will try and send him back to where he was from. I think Bernard and John will come together because they are both different and create some sort of plan on what they should do. John and Bernard could easily blackmail John's father for having a child. There are some things I don't understand out of this chapter. I don't understand how the DHC's wife was able to get pregnant when all the other women in the hatcheries are unable. One thing I did like about this chapter was how Lenina was unable to take her soma and had to see people on the reservation and how they are different from the people around her. She didn't know why the old man looked the way he did because no one where she lives gets old and I think that was interesting. Overall, this chapter was an eye opener for Lenina. I can't decide what I think of Bernard's character at this point. He gives into taking soma when he is so against it throughout the whole book and I think that defeats his purpose. When he is told that he is going to be sent away he gets scared and now I think he is going to stop trying to be different and try to be the same so that he doesn't have to leave. I hope that Lenina getting mad at him for acting different doesn't make him stop. I found chapter 5 strange because it is all about drugs. Everyone takes the drug to make them happy and then they go dance and go to ceremonies. It is also weird how they hallucinate that someone is coming even though Bernard and us know that no one actually is. I think it's crazy that they burn corpses into phosphorus and use them as fertilizer. That is something that k don't think would ever happen. It is strange to me that everyone belongs to everyone. It is hard to grasp that they all believe it's okay to sleep with everyone else. It is strange that the children sleep together because that is not something that would happen in today's society. I hope some of the ideas in this book never actually happen. During chapter 2, the nurses physically shocked the infants so that they didn't like the sight or presence of flowers or books. I think I was a very harsh way to do this procedure but they believed that it was the right way. The infants were also laid in rooms with rows of cots. While they slept, the same tape played over and over again so that they would remember when they woke up. I also thought this was weird and didn't know that that was an affective process. Overall, the chapter seemed unrealistic but could be a possibility. After reading chapter one of Brave New World, I was very confused and had to question what was going on several times. There were a lot of large words that I didn't know and I had trouble imagining that actually happening in the world. It seems unrealistic right now but I'm looking forward to seeing what they actually do with all of the kids and what their plan is to raise them. |
